From the 15th to the 19th century, a gigantic trafficking of human beings took place between Europe, Africa and America. Twelve million men, women and children are torn from their African lands and transported to the other side of the Atlantic to be sold as slaves to the planters of the New World. Trafficking and slavery were definitively abolished by France on 27 April 1848. Slave accounts, captains ‘notebooks and shipowners’ letters form the vibrant web of a history of slavery and give life to the destinies of Yanka and Toriki, born free in a village in the Gulf of Guinea.
